North Ayrshire Council in partnership with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, commissioned consultants to undertake a review of the existing access arrangements at the Largs and Cumbrae ferry terminals and develop options for improving access to both.

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of the increased traffic and to identify potential improvements for passengers.

From this consultation and discussions with stakeholders and members, the Council is progressing to detailed design the following options:

  • Option A (without one-way) for Largs including the provision of Variable Message Signing (VMS) on the main approaches to Largs – This would improve queuing capacity while proposals will be considered to restrict right turning vehicles from Bath Street into Fort Street.
  • Option B for Cumbrae – provision of 3 lanes close to the ferry slip. Further funding is likely to be required.

Details of the consultation analysis and proposed schemes are included in the presentation below.

If you have any questions on the proposals to be taken forward to detailed design please email transportation@north-ayrshire.gov.uk or telephone on 01294 310000 and ask for a member of the Regeneration, Transportation Team.
