Garfield Weston Foundation – Accepting Applications Again

Grants for UK registered charities to support a wide range of projects in the areas of welfare, youth, community, arts, faith, environment, education, health, and museums and heritage.

After closing its capital funding streams last year to focus on revenue grants during the Covid-19 crisis, Garfield Weston Foundation is now open to applications across all its grants programmes: capital, core costs and projects.

Regular grants of up to £100,000 can be used for:

  • Capital costs – for tangible things, such as a building project, repairs, equipment etc.
  • Revenue/unrestricted core costs – towards the general running costs of the organisation. The grants are typically unrestricted and can be used towards costs such as general salaries (but not a specific position or job), rent, programme costs etc.
  • Project costs – for a very specific project or activity and would include all the costs involved in delivering the project, including staff costs and a reasonable percentage of overheads if relevant.

The following types of organisations working in the areas of welfare, youth, community, arts, faith, environment, education, health, and museums and heritage can apply:

  • UK registered charities working in the UK.
  • Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs).
  • Schools, universities or registered educational charities that are either exempt under Charity Commission guidelines or are registered charities.
  • Faith-based organisations that are either exempt under the Charity Commission guidelines or are registered charities.
  • Housing associations.
  • Museums and galleries.

Organisations must be based and operate within the UK.

Match funding is required. The Foundation recommends that applicants have around half of their funding identified before applying.

A grant is unlikely to be for more than around 10% of the total costs of the budget. There are no deadlines. Applications for grants of up to £100,000 can be made at any time and are reviewed on an ongoing basis.


Impact Funding Partners – Hate Crime Security Fund

Grants for capital security measures and improvements to protect places of worship in Scotland from hate crimes and to provide reassurance for faith communities who worship at them.

This is a limited, one-off £500,000 capital fund which aims to ensure that everyone attending a place of worship feels safe and is not subjected to prejudice and hate crime. This includes but is not limited to criminal damage (vandalism, graffiti, willful fire-raising), and threatening and abusive behaviour.

Grants of up to £20,000 will pay for a maximum of three security measures to mitigate the risk from hate crime. These can include, but are not limited to, CCTV, security doors, alarms, fencing, video intercoms and improved lighting. The security measures should be installed within three months of receiving the grant.

Organisations should be applying on behalf of a Place of Worship in Scotland. Applications will be accepted for all faiths including Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, or other.

Organisations do not need to be a charity to apply.

The deadline for applications is 21 July 2021 (5pm).


Ecclesiastical – Movement for Good Awards 2021

Nominate a charity for a chance to win a donation of £1,000 to support work that changes people’s lives for the better.

For a third successive year, Ecclesiastical Insurance is inviting nominations to its £1 million Movement for Good Awards.

The programme has two funding phases:

  • Phase 1 will award 500 charities with £1,000 each. Nominations will be accepted from 24 May to 13 June 2021. The more nominations a charity receives, the greater their chance of winning. Winners are selected by a draw.
  • Phase 2 will take place later in the summer with further details to come. Charities can register to be kept up to date.

Anyone can nominate a charity to receive one of the £1,000 awards as long as the charity:

  • has been in existence for at least six months
  • is a not-for-profit organisation
  • has satisfied the due diligence of the promoter.
  • is registered with one of the following:
    • Charity Commission for England and Wales
    • Charity Commission in Northern Ireland
    • Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator
    • Charities Regulator for the Republic of Ireland
    • Jersey Charity Commissioner or the Guernsey Registry (Channel Islands) or the Central Registry (Isle of Man)
  • does not discriminate unlawfully in any way.
  • does not support any specific political party or affiliated group.
  • does not relate to any controversial subject matter that is contrary to the values and expectations of the promoter.

Eligible charities could range from smaller, volunteer-run groups to larger, well-known organisations.

A charity can win only once but they can be nominated multiple times. The more nominations a charity gets, the more likely they are to win £1,000.

The winners will be selected at random from a pool of nominations and announced on the website from 21 June 2021 to 2 July 2021.

The deadline for entries for a £1,000 grant is 23:59 on Sunday, 13 June 2021.



Tampon Tax Fund Opens for Final Funding Round

The Government has announced charities across the UK can apply now for projects that improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged women and girls in the UK.

The Tampon Tax Fund was introduced in response to VAT being imposed on sanitary products by the European Union. Given that the UK has left the European Union and there has been no tax on period products in the UK since 1 January 2021, the Fund is closing due to lack of income. This is the sixth year of the fund.

This year, the funding is for projects which focus on one of two categories:

  • Violence against women and girls.
  • General programme (for which the Government has identified a number of sub-themes).

The fund is open to individual organisations or formal consortia of charitable, benevolent and philanthropic organisations based and working in the UK. There is particular interest in applications from specialist women’s networks whose projects include making onward grants to other women’s charitable organisations.

In 2021, there is a total of £11.25 million which will be allocated between each administration using the Barnett Formula as a guide: £675,000 for Wales; £393,750 for Northern Ireland; £1.181 million for Scotland; and £9 million for England.

The minimum grant has been decreased from the previous £1 million to £350,000 to enable more charities to apply. There is no maximum grant. Grants may be for 12 to 18-month projects. All activities must be concluded, and funds spent by 31 March 2023. The grant must not represent more than 50% of the applicant’s or consortia’s collective annual income.

The deadline for applications is midnight on 4 July 2021.


Woodward Charitable Trust – General Fund

The Woodward Charitable Trust fund projects that help families and young people and that are aiming to improve the life chances of the beneficiaries. They prefer projects that promote community cohesion and the development of skills that will change the outlook and outcomes for the users. Organisations that promote volunteering and involve both past and present users in their delivery are encouraged.

They are looking for organisations which aim to achieve a positive impact in at least one of the following areas:

  • Children and young people who are isolated, at risk of exclusion or involved in anti-social behaviour.
  • Disadvantaged families
  • Prisoners and ex-offenders and specifically projects that maintain and develop contact with prisoner’s families and help with the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and/or ex-offenders after their release.

The Trustees favour small-scale, locally based initiatives and most grants are only for one year.

Registered charities, Charity Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) and Community Interest Companies (CICs) can apply as long as the maximum annual income is less than £200,000.

The new general online grant round will open on 24 May 2021. The deadline for receipt of applications is 12 noon on 30 July 2021.

The Trustees will consider the applications in October and successful applicants will be notified by email by the end of November.

Foundation Scotland – Essentia Foundation

The Essentia Foundation is looking to provide financial support to charities and community groups that will help achieve the following objectives:

  • Improved health and social welfare of children and young people up to the age of 25 years old.
  • Increased opportunities for training, enhancing learning, upskilling, and developing career opportunities, and supporting young people up to the age of 25 years old to move towards employment

Registered charities, constituted voluntary and community organisations, community companies, and community interest companies can apply if they meet the Fund’s minimum governance standards.

Maximum annual income: £250,000

The next deadline is 28 June 2021 (for a decision 10 August 2021).
