The National Lottery Community Fund/Ikea – Places Called Home Fund Opens for Limited Number of Applications (UK)
Funding for small, local voluntary and community groups and organisations and schools to help improve community shared spaces and run activities that focus on sustainable living in the UK.
The Places Called Home is a £1.5 million grants fund provided by the National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) in partnership with Ikea Limited, the world’s largest home furnishing retailer. The funders anticipate making a total of 300 awards for this pilot partnership programme.
Grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 are available for projects that meet at least two of the following
- Build on the relationships created during the COVID-19 pandemic to increase community activity and the number of people taking part.
- Encourage people to work together, creating opportunities for communities to live in a sustainable and healthy way.
- Raise awareness amongst the public of the importance of connected households, neighbourhoods and resilient communities.
- Develop a new idea, activity or way to come together that has emerged in response to the pandemic.
- Revive or redesign community and common spaces to encourage shared community activities.
The funding can pay for activities or items that will help to revive the community. These could be equipment or materials to renew the community’s shared spaces or activities that focus on sustainable living. The grants can also pay for refurbishment costs, staff and training costs, transport, volunteer expenses and other related costs.
The funding must be spent within nine months of the grant being awarded.
Applications will be accepted from registered charities, voluntary and community organisations, constituted groups or clubs, and other not-for-profit organisations. Schools can apply as long as their project benefits and involves the communities around the school.
Priority will be given to groups who
- Have not received funding from the NLCF before
- Do not have a current NLCF award
- Are smaller organisations or groups with an annual turnover of under £100,000
Other organisations can apply but should consider the priorities listed above.
Groups should not delay in applying as there is a very short window of application.
The programme will close for applications upon the receipt of 1,500 applications or 14 July 2021, whichever comes first.
National Heritage Memorial Fund – COVID-19 Response Fund
Funding is available to community and public sector organisations in the UK for projects to protect nationally important heritage assets that are at risk due to the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The £40 million COVID-19 Response Fund, distributed by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), is open for applications. Applications will be accepted from charities, non-profit organisations and public sector organisations with responsibility for an asset of outstanding importance to the UK’s national heritage which is at risk due to the impact of COVID-19.
Funding is intended to support any heritage asset which may be at risk, including:
- Works of fine and decorative art.
- Museum collections.
- Items of industrial, transport and maritime heritage.
- Historic buildings and land.
Eligible costs and activities include:
- Acquisition/purchase costs, including associated professional fees.
- Transport costs, including conservation standard handling and packing for collections or heavy lift/transport costs for large items/historic vehicles.
- Interim storage costs and investment in new permanent storage capacity.
- Urgent conservation work necessary due to COVID-19 impact and investment to resolve maintenance backlog/deficit; collection care costs.
- Condition surveys, cataloguing, management and conservation planning.
- Professional fees, including legal and other fees to support asset transfer.
- Ownership transition costs; fixed term support to enable sustainable rehoming of heritage asset.
- Organisational development costs to support asset transfer; skills development/capacity building; business review and business planning support.
There are no minimum or maximum levels of grant. However, NHMF operates as a fund of last resort – applicants must show that they have explored, or are exploring, all other possible sources of funding, including their own resources.
Applications may be made at any time until the fund’s final closing date of 30 April 2023.
Impact Funding Partners – Hate Crime Security Fund
Grants for capital security measures and improvements to protect places of worship in Scotland from hate crimes and to provide reassurance for faith communities who worship at them.
The Scottish Government is providing this one-off £500,000 capital fund to ensure that everyone attending a place of worship feels safe and is not subjected to prejudice and hate crime. This includes but is not limited to criminal damage (vandalism, graffiti, wilful fire-raising), and threatening and abusive behaviour.
Grants of up to £20,000 will pay for a maximum of three security measures to mitigate the risk from hate crime. These can include, but are not limited to, CCTV, security doors, alarms, fencing, video intercoms and improved lighting. The security measures should be installed within three months of receiving the grant
Organisations should be applying on behalf of a Place of Worship in Scotland. Applications will be accepted for all faiths including Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, or other. Organisations do not need to be a charity to apply.
The deadline for applications is 21 July 2021 (5pm) for decisions in late September 2021.
BBC Children in Need’s Main – Grants 2021 Programme
Funding for not-for-profit organisations that are working with disadvantaged children and young people aged up to 18 years and living in the UK.
After a six-month break, the BBC Children in Need Main Grants programme has reopened for applications for grants of over £10,000 to support projects for up to three years.
Registered charities and not-for-profit organisations in the UK can apply if they are supporting children and young people of 18 years and under who are experiencing disadvantage through:
- Illness, distress, abuse or neglect.
- Any kind of disability.
- Behavioural or psychological difficulties.
- Living in poverty or situations of deprivation.
The funding is for projects that make differences in children’s lives that help prevent or overcome the effects of the disadvantages they face. Projects achieve these differences by either working directly with children or seeking to improve their social and physical environments.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the funder has temporarily broadened the types of applications it is accepting. Currently funding is being offered that can be used more flexibly than usual.
Applications are encouraged for:
- Project delivery (including staffing and salary costs)
- Creative solutions to deliver much needed services
- Organisational costs to support stability and adaptation. (Including the day-to-day running costs of an organisation as opposed to specific project costs)
All applications will have to show how this funding will make a difference to children and young people’s lives during this crisis.
Applications are not limited to one specific project and a request can be made for organisational running costs. The funder is committed to supporting voluntary groups with these types of grants.
The deadline for applications is 11:30 am on 23 August 2021 for decisions in late January 2022.
Visit Britain – Domestic Support Fund
Funding is available for UK not-for-profit organisations to hold business events and to showcase that the UK has adapted to new ways of meeting in a COVID-19 secure environment.
Applications will be accepted from not-for-profit organisations, including associations and charities, based in the UK.
The applicant organisation must have been in operation for at least one year, and be hosting an event in the UK.
The event can be live and include a virtual component. Support is for total attendees to the live element of a hybrid event. Applications are accepted for stand-alone events only.
Financial support is based on the number of delegates attending a live event, or the live component of a hybrid event. The event organisation can apply for £30 per delegate (cash including VAT) attending an event.
Support is available for events from 100 to 500 people, to a maximum value of £15,000 support.
All activities need to take place by 17 December 2021 and evidence provided by 1 March 2022.
Applications may be made at any time.
Funding is available to UK charitable organisations for projects to improve people’s digital confidence, knowledge and skills to enable them to make more informed decisions about money and have access to financial services
Applications will be accepted from charitable and social enterprise organisations with an annual income above £75,000.
- Be based in the UK and working within one of the nations or regions.
- Be a UK registered charity or Community Interest Company.
- Have at least three unconnected Trustees, Directors or Management Committee members.
- Have a bank account in the organisation’s name with at least two unconnected signatories.
- Have been operating for at least 18 months and have at least one set of annual accounts.
Priority will be given to small and medium-sized organisations with an income of less than £2 million.
The programme will provide 12 grants of up to a total of £150,000 per organisation.
Grants are for a period of three years. Successful applicants may request differing amounts in each of the three years, with a minimum of £25,000 in any one year.
The deadline for applications is 13 August 2021.
Ecclesiastical – Phase 2 of Movement for Good Awards
Charities across the UK can apply now for a chance to win a grant of £10,000 and the possibility of an additional grant of £50,000 or £100,000.
Phase two is open to charities registered in the UK and Republic of Ireland with an income of less than £5 million.
This phase is ‘actively championing innovation, giving charities the backing they need to propel their plans forward and turn creative ideas into practical solutions that benefit society’.
The awards are aimed at charities working in areas that support five themes.
Projects or innovative initiatives must take place within the UK/Republic of Ireland and have clear outcomes and benefits:
- Education and skills – projects should enable learning and development, in particular among young people.
- Rural or community development- projects should support and build communities, in particular in rural areas.
- Arts, culture or heritage – projects should help celebrate, preserve or protect heritage and culture.
- Climate change or environment – projects should contribute to the collective challenge to tackle impact on the climate and environment.
- Human rights or equality – projects should further a more inclusive and equal world for everyone.
There is a total of £500,000 which will be distributed as follows:
- 30 charities will receive an award of £10,000
- 2 winning charities will receive an additional award of £50,000
- 1 winning charity will receive an additional award of £100,000.

Barclays’ 100×100 UK COVID-19 Community Relief Programme Re-Opens
Funding for larger UK charities working to support vulnerable people and communities impacted by COVID-19, and to alleviate the associated social and economic hardship caused by the crisis.
Following on from its initial programme last year, in which Barclays awarded 100 grants of £100,000 each to UK registered charities, Barclays has extended the programme to make 50 grants of £100,000 available to UK registered charities with an income exceeding £1 million.
Barclays is seeking UK based charity partners who can show their work is positively impacting people in the UK communities where Barclays has a presence.
The funding is intended to support communities as they emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on the following four priority areas:
- Help for people experiencing physical and mental health issues.
- Financial assistance for people facing financial hardship.
- Support for ethnically diverse communities disproportionately impacted by the crisis.
- Enhancing digital accessibility.
Applicants will need to:
- Demonstrate a track record and ability to deliver impactful, on-the-ground support to directly meet the needs of vulnerable communities facing social and economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
- Articulate how funding from Barclays will be deployed to meaningfully support/boost their work.
- Meet the immediate needs of vulnerable communities, in at least one of the four focus areas listed above.
- Be able to use the funds within 12 months of receipt of the donation.
- Demonstrate positive outcomes from their programmes through high-level impact metrics.
- Effectively run the charity to ensure a sound financial position.
Applications will be accepted from 12 July 2021 to 6 August 2021 (6pm).
Impact Funding Partners – Scottish Government Volunteering Support Programme
The Scottish Government’s Volunteering Support Fund is now open for applications. The £3.3 million Fund will be delivered on its behalf by Impact Funding Partners over the next 3 years. Organisations can apply for up to £30,000 to March 2024.
The fund is geared towards organisations in Scotland with an annual income of under £250,000. It will enable Scotland’s small to medium sized third sector organisations to recruit additional volunteers who will contribute towards delivering a new volunteering project, or extending/expanding an existing one, and improve how volunteers are supported in their role.
The fund will support organisations to deliver on four key outcomes:
- Increase diversity in the third sector’s volunteer pool, to particularly include people who experience disadvantage or would traditionally experience barriers to volunteering
- Improve governance, leadership and financial knowledge of organisations through the recruitment of skilled volunteers to enhance the third sector’s capacity
- Improve organisational capacity to provide opportunities for skills and personal development through volunteering
- Enhance services delivered by organisations to better meet the needs of the communities they serve

Scottish Government Community Capacity & Resilience Fund
The Community Capacity and Resilience Fund (CCRF) from Scottish Government aims to support local, community-based organisations with small grants of up to £8,000 to deliver activities that help people mitigate the impact of welfare reform.
The Fund presents an opportunity for organisations to develop new ways of working to mitigate the effects of welfare reform, combat poverty and social inequality, promote social inclusion and have a preventative impact in their communities.
Previous rounds of the Community Capacity & Resilience Fund have delivered a broad range of successful projects – all unique in their delivery but aligned in their focus. This new round is launching with the coronavirus pandemic as a backdrop and applications will therefore need to develop approaches that will ensure continuity of provision and a blended approach to service delivery.
Applications should be made online and close at 12 noon on 10 September 2021. There are two Approval Panel meetings during the course of the application window. This means applications submitted earlier in the process will be assessed and therefore contracted and able to start first.
2022 GSK IMPACT Awards and new GSK Grow Programme
Charities are facing significant challenges as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic while continuing to provide vital services to keep people healthy and connected. This year, more than ever, The Kings Fund are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2022 GSK IMPACT Awards. This is also the 25th anniversary of the awards, and to mark this milestone they have increased their funding and launched the new GSK Grow Programme, which will support smaller charities.
The GSK IMPACT Awards provide core funding and free training for charities doing excellent work to improve people’s health and wellbeing. Organisations must be at least three years old, working in a health-related field in the UK, with income between £120,000 and £3 million. Up to 20 awards will be made, ranging from £4,000 to £50,000, plus free training and development valued at a further £9,500. Organisations will also have a film made, receive help with press and publicity, and be given a set of promotional materials.
The new GSK Grow Programme supports small charities with total annual income between £20,000 and £120,000. Up to 10 charities will receive £10,000 in unrestricted funding plus training and development valued at £3,200.
The GSK IMPACT Awards are funded by GSK and managed in partnership with The King’s Fund. They are judged by a prestigious panel of judges and provide national recognition for the winning organisations. They also give organisations access to a free leadership programme, designed specifically for health charities, provided by The King’s Fund. After taking part in the training, organisations can then join our network of health charities which supports ongoing service and organisational development.
